To Peter Ruis

Every year in John Lewis the story is the same, passed down to new recruits like legend - when it’s winter the air conditioning is on and when it’s summer the heating is put on.

It sounds ridiculous, until you work through it yourselves! Head office dictate what temperature the climate control systems are set to. A group of people who often times have never worked a shop floor or set foot into the branches (that are often lined with glass fronts like greenhouses!). It’s laid out as a fiscally responsible method to save for the business, but really it’s a human expense at the level of partners who have to work in either soaring or freezing temperatures all day. Management will claim to have no power over temperatures, yet the admin offices are always well regulated.

This is a change that impacts everyone who enters John Lewis from a partner to a customer. Partners who have to stick to uniform policies which aren’t heatwave friendly and customers who struggle to be in the shop comfortably.

Petition text

Individual branches need to be given rights to their individual temperatures. Why can’t a shop that’s 25°C one day turn down the AC, and then turn it back up the next day if it hits 19°C? The infrastructure is there for localised temperatures, it’s about time the people effected by it daily have a say in how it’s used to benefit them!
