I am writing to ask you to include Shared Parental Leave for the self-employed as you work with the Prime Minister on her legacy policy of increased paternity leave.

As a self-employed parent, this would really have helped my family. And there is a proven demand amongst the self-employed community for SPL. A Parental Pay Equality study showed 74% would take SPL if they could, and a report by Parents In Performing Arts put the figure at 72%.

The net cost of extending Shared Parental Leave & Pay to the self-employed would be minimal as Self-employed Shared Parental Pay would be paid at the same rate as Maternity Allowance to families who already qualify for either Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance.

This is a cost-effective way of helping self-employed fathers bond with their families and share caring responsibilities whilst supporting new mothers in maintaining their businesses. With self-employment on the rise, this would be a wonderful legacy to leave for business and for equality.
