Dear Chancellor Healey,

I am writing to ask you to fix the student loan system.

In July, the Education Secretary called the interest charged on student loans “egregious” on national radio. The Treasury Committee found that student loans were mis-sold, and gave you a clear, costed way forward: reverse the repayment threshold freeze, at a cost of up to £355 million a year.

Right now, millions of graduates are paying money out of every pay packet while their balances keep growing. A loan that was meant to open the door to higher education has left people with debts many will never clear. Whether it is our own loan, our children’s, or a friend’s, this affects all of us.

Please will you:

- Scrap interest on student loans, so balances stop growing while people are paying them back
- Raise the repayment threshold, so people can cover basic living costs before repayments start
- Reverse the repayment threshold freeze, as the Treasury Committee recommended

Please set out what the government will do about the Treasury Committee’s finding that student loans were mis-sold. In March, you voted against a motion on student loans in the House of Commons. As Chancellor, you now have the chance to show that was not your final word.

I look forward to your response.

Will you chip in?

Can you boost this campaign to get thousands more graduates emailing John Healey before the Autumn Budget? The Budget is weeks away and right now every graduate who emails the Chancellor makes it harder for him to ignore the parliamentary recommendation to fix the broken student loan system.
