Dear Stuart Machin,

I am writing as a long-time M&S customer because I am deeply concerned about the decision to cancel staff’s Boxing Day holiday at the last minute, and about the misleading explanations your team have since given to the public.

Your customer service response claims that working on Boxing Day is “voluntary”. This is simply not true. Workers all over the country are saying they have been told they must work on the 26th or cancel their holiday, and many describe being pressured or given the news far too late to change plans. Families have booked travel, organised childcare and arranged visits months in advance. This last minute disruption has caused distress that could easily have been avoided.

It is unacceptable that loyal colleagues, who have already endured a difficult year, are now being placed in this position and then told the situation is “voluntary”. Your staff deserve honesty, clarity and an apology.

Here is what workers themselves are saying:

“It’s not voluntary. It’s a lie. We planned our Christmas months ago and now we’re being told we have to work.”

“I put holiday in and was told it would be cancelled. We have no choice in the matter.”

“All my children live far away. I cannot visit them now. It’s our country’s main holiday and this decision has ruined it.”

This does not reflect the values that M &S claims to stand for, and it is damaging trust among both colleagues and customers. According to Organise polling, the overwhelming majority of customers oppose this decision and many are now choosing not to shop with you over Christmas.

Please show that M&S still values its people and is willing to act with integrity.

I urge you to:
- Tell the truth about the Boxing Day policy
- Apologise to staff for the late notice and disruption
- Restore the guaranteed Boxing Day break

Until this decision is reversed, I will not be shopping at M&S this Christmas.
