I am writing to ask for the government to support the Shared Parental Leave and Pay (Extension) Bill, due for its second reading.

The bill would allow self-employed parents to share parental leave between them as they see fit, using the same funds already allocated to mothers in the form of Maternity Allowance or Statutory Maternity Pay in the case of employed mothers with a self-employed partner. This would give self-employed families much more flexibility and give self-employed mothers a better chance of keeping their businesses running when they become parents.

Currently self-employed fathers have no way of getting paid time off when they have children, and the government’s argument that they have more autonomy over their working hours misses the point that most families cannot afford to take unpaid time off work. ONS figures show that the most self-employed people earn below the national average, so taking unpaid time off simply isn’t an option for many.

Please could you allocate government time for this bill, so that self-employed families are able to balance work and family life more equally, and to prevent women’s careers from suffering. It is unacceptable in 2019 for parenting to still be seen as an exclusively female occupation, yet current legislation around the self-employed leaves many families with no option than to continue these outdated stereotypes.

I urge you to back this bill and allow self-employed families to embrace the benefits of shared parenting.
