Please email Ofgem with a copy of our people-powered report demanding that they abolish standing charges and stop energy companies from passing their upfront costs to consumers. Those costs should be absorbed from the huge amounts of profit that energy companies report year on year.

I am writing to you to express my concern over standing charges and the disproportionate impact that they have on low-income households. Being forced to pay £300 just for the right to buy energy is cruel for those struggling to pay rent, buy food, and stay warm.

Ofgem is failing in its duty to protect consumers, by forcing even the poorest to pay these exorbitant charges. A poll tax on energy, made even worse because we are being forced to pay the huge costs of Ofgem’s failed regulation of dodgy energy suppliers.

Here is why one Organise member is supporting the campaign to abolish standing charges:

“I do anything to keep the costs down, I'm disabled and housebound most of the time. I therefore do not put my heating on and spend most of my time in bed with an electric blanket on as it is the cheapest way of keeping warm. I also eat mainly microwavable meals as it's cheaper than putting the oven on. Standing charges soon add up and eat into what money I've put aside for fuel bills."

Together we urge Ofgem to:

1) Abolish standing charges and require energy companies to pay for running costs using profits.

2) Require energy companies to implement fairer charges based on actual energy use to support low-consumption households with their bills.

3) Provide better support specifically for low-income, high-consumption households, such as family households and those with disabled household members, so that the most vulnerable members of society can afford to use the energy they need.
