I am writing to the Business and Trade Committee regarding P&O Ferries not paying their workers the UK minimum wage, due to a legal loophole the government promised to close two years ago.

I welcome the committee's move to question P&O Ferries' CEO Peter Hebblethwaite but until he actually signs the voluntary government charter, which commits it to paying maritime workers at least the UK minimum wage, P&O Ferries should be sanctioned immediately. And this scandal is further proof that this government needs to step up and implement legislation that prevents workers being exploited this way.

Organise is a movement prioritising workers' rights and that movement doesn't stop at borders. Workers on P&O Ferries reported working 12-hour daily shifts, without a day off for months at a time, on the Dover to Calais route. One worker described the whole experience as like being in “jail”. This is unacceptable.

Will you please show your commitment to workers' rights by:

1. holding companies like P&O Ferries and their bosses to account 
2. introducing legislation that closes this legal loophole once and for all
3. ensuring P&O Ferries compensates workers that it has exploited
