It's just not fair. 20,000 NHS workers are missing out on a 'covid backlog bonus' for working tirelessly through the pandemic. The government are excluding nurses who aren't directly employed by the NHS despite many of them doing the same work (and having the same contract terms) as nurses who are getting the thank you bonus.

Petition text

We, the undersigned, are petitioning with deep concern and hope regarding the recent decision on the 'covid backlog bonus' distribution. There are at least 20,000 NHS workers who, despite offering their unwavering dedication and service throughout the challenging times of the pandemic, have been excluded from receiving the 'covid backlog bonus'. The reason for their exclusion is based on their direct employment status with the NHS. Many of these professionals have executed duties identical to their colleagues who are directly employed by the NHS, often under the same contractual terms.

We believe in the ethos of the NHS, which stands for comprehensive care, inclusivity, and fairness. To differentiate between workers based on technical employment definitions, especially during such unprecedented times, seems counterintuitive to these principles. We were heartened to learn that the Government is 'considering its position' on this issue. Therefore, we earnestly urge you to recognise the value and contribution of each and every NHS worker, regardless of their direct employment status.

A 'thank you' in the form of the 'covid backlog bonus' should be a universal recognition for every individual who stood at the forefront during the pandemic. Our NHS needs every worker to be motivated, recognised, and supported. A gesture of gratitude can go a long way in ensuring their continued dedication and morale.

We implore the Department for Health to review this matter with fairness and empathy and to ensure that all NHS workers receive the bonus they rightfully deserve. We, the undersigned, look forward to your positive response for all NHS workers.
