To Matt Hammerstein

The Covid-19 pandemic saw all colleagues made to work from home. It was a huge change for the business and the way we all worked collaboratively. After a few months of transition, it started to become “the new normal”.

For myself, it was a positive change. I was saving nearly 4 hours commute time per day in office and a large amount of money per month. This enabled me to achieve things I never thought I would be able to such as funding fertility treatment and buying my first home. Due to no commute, I was able to put that time into my work and would log on before 8 o clock most days feeling refreshed and able to focus.

My peers all experienced their own benefits be it becoming more involved in their family eg school runs and/or the financial benefits. The business has performed well during this period and it felt like a great place to be due to having the work/life balance. It’s has been a real eye opener around how a career and home life can truly go hand in hand.

Recent announcements have stated that from September 2023, we will be mandated to go into one strategic site 2 SET days per week if we are full time and part time equivalents.

A lot of colleagues are unhappy with this forced change due to the impact this will have to them personally and financially. We have become used to this new way of working and are now being forced to change after 3 years.

Even though a lot of colleagues have candidly explained how they feel, it feels like we are not being listened to and it was almost positioned as, our customer’s finances are more important. A lot of colleagues are customers and hold mortgages, current accounts and other lending products with Barclays. This extra expense could impact how we manage these.

There are also a lot of inconsistencies across the business depending on what site you are based. Some sites will require 2 per week where as others simply do not have capacity and May be less than 1.

We are in a huge financial crisis with high mortgage rates, soaring energy bills, high food and petrol AND the most expensive childcare system in the world. To add an additional financial cost per month will put a lot of colleagues (myself included) into financial difficulty and destitution.

Petition text

- Colleagues should be allowed to choose how many days per week they would like to work in a site based upon their financial and personal situation
- Colleagues who are more than 1 hour away from their closest strategic site should have an option to work at other sites such as branches or contact centres
- Consistency should be had across sites. If one site can only handle colleagues 1 time per week or less, this should be replicated across the business
- If it is to be mandated, the business should be looking at supporting colleagues with travel cost for a minimum of 12 months
- Revisit the number of days set for part time colleagues. If you are 0.7FTE, you will still be required to visit 2 days per week. This means you’re absorbing the same cost on 30less salary.
