To Brewdog Management

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the recent incident involving the unjust dismissal of Myriam* (not her real name), a former BrewDog employee, who was terminated after expressing her distress over the presence of far-right English Defence League (EDL) members in the BrewDog Waterloo bar where she worked.

On 23 April, ahead of a rally to mark St George’s Day, members of the EDL gathered at the BrewDog Waterloo bar. Myriam*, upon arriving at work and discovering the presence of the EDL, voiced her distress to her manager, using strong language to convey her shock and concern. Despite her understandable reaction, given her personal history and the reputation of the EDL, Myriam* was accused of "aggressive behaviour and use of inappropriate language" and subsequently dismissed for serious misconduct.

We believe this decision by BrewDog to be unfair and not reflective of the circumstances. The EDL is a known far-right group with a history of violence and racial abuse. Myriam*, being of Asian descent, had every reason to feel distressed and unsafe. Her reaction was a natural response to an alarming situation, not an act of misconduct.

Petition text

We urge BrewDog to:

Reinstate Myriam*: Acknowledge that her dismissal was a disproportionate response to her justified distress and reinstate her position within the company.

Apologise Publicly: Issue a public apology to Myriam* for the distress caused by her dismissal and for not providing adequate support and communication to staff regarding the potential presence of EDL members.

Improve Staff Support and Communication: Ensure that all staff members are informed in advance of any potential disturbances and are given the necessary support to handle such situations. Implement training programs to better prepare staff for handling distressing scenarios involving hate groups.

Review and Revise Disciplinary Policies: Reevaluate the company's disciplinary policies to ensure that they are fair, transparent, and take into consideration the context and emotional well-being of employees.

Commit to Creating a Safe and Inclusive Workplace: Reaffirm BrewDog’s commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive working environment for all employees, regardless of their background.

BrewDog has built a reputation as a "punk" challenger to mainstream beer brands, promoting values of inclusivity and fairness. It is imperative that the company lives up to these values in its treatment of employees. We believe that taking the actions outlined above will not only rectify the injustice faced by Myriam* but also reinforce BrewDog’s commitment to its employees and values.

We stand in solidarity with Myriam* and all BrewDog employees who deserve to be treated with respect and fairness.
