To The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood
When people came to the UK, the rules were clear. They have worked hard, joined community life, and are making the UK their home.
Now, the Government’s proposed changes to Earned Settlement would retrospectively change those rules. In simple terms, the goalposts are being moved midway through the match.
Retrospectively changing the pathway to citizenship undermines trust, stability and integration. Children and families who have played by the rules should not find those rules rewritten.

Petition text
Organise and Citizens UK have teamed up to demand that the Government:
- Pause the proposed changes
- Give Parliament extra time to scrutinise the impact
- Ensure reform does not undermine commitments on child poverty, social cohesion, and stabilising the social care and NHS workforce
We agree the system needs reform. But reform must not come at the expense of people who have followed the rules and built their lives here.
Don’t Move the Goalposts for people who have built their lives in the UK
