To Kate Dearden, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Employment Rights, Competition and Markets of the United Kingdom

I didn't know I was working this weekend until Friday afternoon.

I'd already turned down a shift somewhere else. I'd already told my daughter I couldn't pick her up. Then the rota came out and I wasn't on it. No explanation. No sorry. No pay.

I'm a hospitality worker. I don't have a single guaranteed hour in my contract, which means every week starts with uncertainty. It's lying awake on a Sunday doing the maths. It's skipping lunch because you're not sure if you should spend the money yet. It's saying no to things, again and again, because you can't plan anything when you don't know what you're earning.

Over a million workers in the UK are living like this. In care homes, coffee shops, warehouses, hotel kitchens. Workers who can't get a mortgage, who go in ill because they can't afford to lose a shift, whose hours can be cut with no notice and no consequences.

The government is consulting right now on how the new guaranteed hours law will work in practice. That consultation closes 25 August. Business lobbying groups have already had their say. Workers need to be heard too.

Andy Burnham becomes Prime Minister on 20 July. He has committed to tackling exploitative zero-hours contracts. Workers are making sure it's on his desk from day one.

Petition text

Workers are calling on Kate Dearden to make sure the regulations that come out of this consultation actually do what they promise:

- Give every worker the legal right to a guaranteed hours contract after 12 weeks of regular work
- Pay workers for shifts cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, no exceptions
- End exclusivity clauses that stop zero-hours workers picking up shifts elsewhere
- Bring in enforcement with real teeth, not guidance employers can ignore
