Under the current system, the disparity in sick pay rights between salaried and hourly-paid workers is stark, often leaving the most vulnerable workers without adequate financial support during sickness. This not only affects individual well-being but also has broader implications for public health and workforce productivity.

We, the undersigned, call for urgent reform of the UK's sick pay system. Our proposal is inspired by best practices from other European countries and seeks to create a fairer, more inclusive system that supports all workers during times of illness.

1. Unified Sick Pay Rate: Implement a uniform sick pay rate for all employees, ensuring no worker receives less than a minimum threshold.
2. Eliminate the Waiting Period: Allow workers to receive sick pay from the first day of illness, removing the current three-day unpaid waiting period.
3. Extend Coverage Duration: Increase the duration for which sick pay can be claimed, offering extended support during prolonged illnesses.
4. Simplify Eligibility: Make eligibility criteria inclusive, covering part-time and temporary employees.
5. Incentivise Employers: Encourage businesses to offer enhanced sick pay benefits through government incentives.
6. Increase Awareness: Launch public campaigns to inform both employers and employees about the revised sick pay rights.
7. Regular System Review: Establish a mechanism to regularly assess and adjust the sick pay system in response to changing workforce needs and economic conditions.

Funding:
We propose a balanced funding model involving government support and employer contributions, with considerations for the capacities of small businesses.
