Statutory sick pay is only £116.75 a week - or £3 an hour . That's not enough to live on.
In fact, it's just 18of the average weekly wage. How can anyone afford their bills, rent or mortgage, and to buy food when they're off sick? They can't.
It means that people have to come to work when they're sick, spreading illness to colleagues and delaying their own recovery. It's unfair on everyone.
No one wants to get sick, but sometimes it happens. And when it does, we need to be able to take the time off work to recover and not fall into poverty.
