To Chancellor Rachel Reeves

I am a student of Art University Bournemouth but I live in Salisbury. It takes me about 2 hours to get to my campus to attend classes, because I must take two buses to get there. One from Salisbury to Bournemouth and then from city centre to campus.

Before the £2 price cap was introduced the price for a single fare to Bournemouth from Salisbury was over £7, and a bus price in city was about £2.50. That's nearly £10 one way to get to University and if you count a return and the fact that as a full time student I have to be there every working day, the weekly cost of travel would amount to £100, monthly that’s over £400! That's insane amount of money for travel and way above my budget!

Keeping a price cap at £2 allows me to study at all and if it is scrapped I won't be able to continue pursuing my dream career, not to mention I will end up with a massive debt for the rest of my life. I'm not a young person, I'm 41, I have husband and kids so I can't move to Bournemouth to save on travel. And I don't drive.

Having affordable bus fare is crucial for the success of my studies and mine and my family's future as I am the only breadwinner. I'm sure there are other reasons to keep the fare low from people in different situations, like inhabitants of rural areas, but this is my story.
