To Chancellor Rachel Reeves & DWP Minister Liz Kendall

From next April, the full new state pension is expected to rise above the tax threshold – meaning people who’ve worked hard their whole lives could start paying thousands in income tax. Just for receiving the state pension we’re entitled to.

The state pension is such a measly amount of money (£230.25 a week) and millions of pensioners are in terrible poverty. It can hardly be counted as an "income" - it's more a savings pot we've paid into, that we finally get access to. This isn't about not taxing pensioners who are very well off, as they'll be taxed on private pensions or their other sources of income anyway. This is about ringfencing the £230 per week, to stop those of us with very little money having some of it taken back off us. Our pensions are not enough to live on anyway, taxing it is just insult on injury.

The government hasn’t committed to protecting pensioners from this. So we need a huge public response to show Chancellor Rachel Reeves this matters. Please sign the petition now:

Make the full state pension exempt from tax.

The state pension shouldn't be viewed as an income, and therefore should not contribute towards someone's personal tax allowance. This would allow pensioners who are struggling on very little money to keep more of it.
