NHS phlebotomists are currently on band 2 and paid £11.45 per hour, the same as band 1. They are, along with others, on the frontline with all new patients and usually work with patients throughout their recovery. They can not start taking blood without having months of training. Phlebotomists now have to do some of the first stages of the lab work too. Phlebotomists have to work with the threat to themselves of bloodborne organisms that can be transmitted after needle-sticks, including viruses such as hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), bacteria like syphilis, and parasites such as malaria. Most NHS Phlebotomists struggle to survive on their minimum wages. On top of all this, NHS staff at my hospital now have to pay nearly £70 a month for parking on-site.

Petition text

Phlebotomists need to be at least a band 3, which will give them higher wages that reflect the responsibility placed on them. This will help them with their struggle to pay their constantly increasing living costs.
