To James Murray MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care
Dr Nadeem Crowem, an A&E doctor at the Royal Free with 15 years of service, was suspended - linked to social media posts about the treatment of Palestinians in Gaza, made outside work, on an account that didn't even name their trust. The suspension was later lifted and no further action was taken, but they say the way it was handled left them unable to go back. Their tribunal is still going, and nobody yet knows how it'll end.
Their case has made a lot of us ask the same question. If they'd posted about Ukraine, or the cost of living, or something else entirely, would it have been flagged the same way? None of us can say for sure, because there's no clear rule on what we can say once we've clocked off. It just depends which trust you work for, and who happens to complain.
That's not good enough for any of us who show up and do this work, day in, day out.
Petition text
I'm calling on NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care to:
1. Say clearly, once and for all, that NHS workers can speak freely about what we believe once we've clocked off - including on Gaza, Palestine, and any other matter of public concern.
2. Make sure no NHS worker is disciplined for a lawful opinion, expressed in their own time.
3. Publish clear guidance so every one of us knows where we stand, instead of finding out the hard way.
NHS workers should be able to express their beliefs freely off the clock
