To Angela Rayner - Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government

I found out, from a neighbour, that an AI data centre is going up on the edge of my village. Not from the local authority, or anyone else whose job it was to tell me. I never had the chance to say what I thought about it before it was agreed.

Since January 2026, ministers can grant specific data centre developments a fast track straight to central government, skipping the local council entirely, the same status given to roads, railways and power stations. Data centres were designated Critical National Infrastructure back in 2024, and the following year, ministers built this fast track on top of it. Since July this year, the one formal consultation step that used to come with decisions like this has been scrapped too.

This is happening all around the UK - Buckinghamshire, Brick Lane and now in village too. We are being told what's happening to our water, our sleep, our streets, after the decision's already made.

Petition text

No AI data centre should get approved anywhere in the UK until everyone affected, the people who'll live alongside it and the people who'll build it, has been properly consulted, with their concerns actually answered, not just logged.

We want the Secretary of State to remove data centres from the fast-track Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects regime, so they go back through the normal local planning process, which requires proper consultation as standard, rather than skipping it as they can now.
