The fitness industry has seen a growing profit within the last few decades. Fitness is an ever evolving industry where music is in constant rotation, new and innovative training is constantly being updated, and it’s seen a real boom over the health conscious people making positive changes in their life to move better.
Fitness instructors are one of the biggest attractions to health and fitness centres. Bringing hundreds of people in through the doors, delivering group exercise sessions is a job that requires instructors to perform either self-made choreography or deliver an already made programme to the members of their gym. Most instructors spend countless hours learning choreography, practising in studios to ensure they look professional whilst teaching, and to solidify movements and music changes into their brains to teach amazing classes.
Instructors work just as hard as personal trainers, if not harder, as they are physically required to demonstrate routines from start to finish. Personal trainers have more earning potential, being able to deliver countless sessions back to back, where as instructors are limited due to the physical strain on the body. Instructors have worked physically and mentally more than any other health fitness and leisure position in the business, yet it seems every other department besides group exercise has received annual increases in pay, whilst the Instructors have remained on the same wages for 20 years!
Petition text
We are asking everyone in the group exercise world who have been performing classes for so long on this wage to increase.
Members of your classes to sign their support, so that they can keep attending your fitness classes and enjoy the experience you provide. Some gyms have been on £20 an hour for so long - back in the day this kind of hourly wage would get you a lot for the amount of work that we did, however choreography is harder, class delivery is more intense, and we are learning more to deliver the best and we don’t get appreciated for it.
How many times have management passed on feedback from members about your classes being amazing and how they attend every week? How many times have you been told that the group exercise classes are the heart of the gym that without them you’d be just a chain gym?
We create a community with classes. We bring the members in and we don’t get recognised enough for it. The time is now! Inflation, cost of living, more work for the same money? It’s time to say no more! Minimum hourly wages for classes should be £28 upwards, looking towards £30/£35/£40. If we had received a 25p pay rise per year, we’d be on £30 per class, however the gyms don’t see us as valuable. So, this is us showing how valuable we are to the gyms and to the community. Please sign this and share with everyone to get us the pay rise that we deserve. Get us the correct pay rise that was due long ago.
A pay rise for group exercise instructors!
