To Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister

Assigning Caroline Richards to oversee the compensation process for victims of the Horizon scandal is not only inappropriate but also insensitive to the plight of the over 550 wrongfully prosecuted Post Office staff. This decision undermines the integrity of the compensation scheme and does little to restore faith in the Post Office’s commitment to rectifying the injustices meted out to its workers.

We, the undersigned, are calling for the immediate removal of Caroline Richards as the manager of the Horizon Shortfall compensation scheme. It has come to our attention that Caroline Richards, with over 30 years of service at the Post Office, played a pivotal role in the wrongful prosecution of former sub-postmistress Jacqueline McDonald, among others, under the flawed Horizon system. She should not be allowed any role in deciding how the compensation is given to victims.

Petition text

The Post Office Horizon computer scandal represents one of the most significant miscarriages of justice in recent UK history, affecting hundreds of lives through wrongful convictions, financial ruin, and untold emotional distress. For many victims, the compensation scheme offers a pathway to reclaiming their dignity and financial stability. However, the involvement of individuals directly linked to their persecution in managing this scheme is a direct conflict of interest and a barrier to justice.

Therefore, we demand the following:

1. The immediate removal of Caroline Richards from her role in managing the Horizon Shortfall compensation scheme.
2. The establishment of a completely independent process for managing compensation claims, free from the influence of those previously involved in the wrongful prosecutions.
3. A transparent review of the compensation scheme’s management to ensure it serves the best interests of the victims, with input from affected parties.

This petition is not just about rectifying a single wrong but about ensuring justice, transparency, and accountability within the Post Office. We stand together, demanding immediate action to restore confidence in the compensation process and support those who have suffered unjustly.

We urge you to consider our plea for justice and fairness for the victims of the Horizon scandal. It is time to make things right.
