To Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK

I’m an Uber driver in London. Like thousands of other drivers, I work long hours every week, often ten or twelve hours a day, just to scrape by. But Uber takes up to half of every fare, and what’s left often isn’t enough to cover rent, bills, or food. The pay is so low that many of us are forced to claim Universal Credit just to survive. We work full-time, providing a service that keeps London moving, but we still have to rely on government support to get by. Uber makes billions in profit every year, while drivers live in poverty and taxpayers pick up the bill. The government ends up subsidising Uber’s poverty pay, while the company dodges responsibility for fair wages. That’s not right.

Petition text

I’m calling on Mayor Sadiq Khan to step in. He must meet with Uber bosses and demand that drivers are paid fairly, enough to live on without having to claim benefits. If Uber wants to operate in London, it should pay drivers a real living wage. The UK is supposed to be a country that rewards hard work. Yet Uber’s system traps drivers in poverty while the rest of us foot the bill.
Mayor Khan: Tell Uber to stop exploiting drivers and pay us fairly so we can earn a living without relying on Universal Credit.
