To Ann Cable MBE - Chief Commissioner of St John Ambulance & Orlando Fraser KC - Chair, The Charity Commission

St John Ambulance, is currently in a lot of financial trouble due to mismanagement by the Executive Leadership, with many leaders leaving while many staff now face redundancy and losing their jobs. Over two thirds of all staff nationally are waiting to hear if they will still have a job left next month or not.

Employees are not the only ones being treated unfairly though as St John places a high demand on their volunteers. Volunteers have positions of high responsibility, often managing huge geographic areas and personnel, but even with volunteers doing 80 percent of the work, the organisation is in a dire financial position.

They are selling vehicles and buildings for a one time boost to finances, with local young people facing the brunt of these changes. Many workers at St John Ambulance have reported a culture of cliques formed by management and being forced out of the organisation if they disagree with managers. With district and regional teams often holding so much power, they form cliques to ensure that anything said against them is quickly silenced by another member of that clique and they are protected, but for those that dare to call out the culture or inappropriate behaviour, their lives are made a misery with constant complaints, disciplinary and other meetings. Meanwhile, members of the cliques get away with everything.

St John Ambulance is no longer the organisation of caring individuals who look out for one another, it is a PTSD inducing, vulture pit of soul destroying managers with only their own interests at play (a bit like our MPs).

There needs to be an immediate investigation by the Charities Commission into the financial mismanagement of the organisation which has left it in such dire financial circumstances. The Children’s Commissioner should do an investigation into how young people are really treated in some districts. There needs to be an immediate external review into the internal culture of the organisation and I believe a full management review at every level.

There also needs to be a modernisation of training courses offered so St John does not fall behind other training providers who offer FREC courses to hopefully save some trainers' jobs.
