To Glasgow City Council

Over the school holidays, thousands of children across Glasgow receive subsidised meals from Glasgow City Council to compensate for missing out on free school meals.

However during the period of mourning the late Queen, Glasgow City Council’s administration used “delegated authority” to slash this vital service by 20 per cent, bypassing due process and avoiding proper scrutiny from all other elected councillors.

This means that over the October week children received 4 meals instead of 5 and as the planned cuts increase into next year, some of our most vulnerable children will receive no free meals by the Spring holidays.

This decision is an utter disgrace to democratic process and is a shameful attack on Glasgow’s poorest families. At a time when council leader Susan Aitken’s own salary went up by £9000, when public sector workers have had to struggle for a fair pay rise, it is clear that this council is not fit to rise to the challenge of resolving child poverty and starvation in Glasgow.

Susan Aitken has stolen food from our children’s mouths, and we will not accept it.
