To Kate Dearden MP, Minister for Employment Rights and Consumer Protection and Peter Kyle MP, Secretary of State for Business and Trade
From December, gig workers doing the same jobs for the same companies in the EU won't have to put up with this. New EU law means platforms have to tell workers how these systems make decisions about them, and a human being has to be involved before anyone's account can be suspended or shut down.
In the UK, none of that applies. Same companies, same apps, same jobs, but fewer rights because we live in the UK.
Petition text
I want the UK government to make sure that every platform operating here (Bolt, Uber, Deliveroo, Just Eat, Amazon Flex and the rest) is forced to provide gig workers the same protections EU workers are getting this December.
The UK Government should protect us by making sure we are told how the app is monitoring and managing our work, and making sure a real person reviews any decision to suspend or cut off our account rather than an algorithm.
Gig workers shouldn't have fewer rights just because the UK government hasn't bothered to catch up with the protections given to the rest of Europe.
