To Wes Streeting, Health Secretary

When I tried to return expensive NHS equipment so it could be used, I was told by contractors that it was 'not their problem'. Eventually they agreed to take the electric bed and hoist but told me all equipment gets put into the skip. I tried to give back 3 walking frames and crutches and was met with the same response: 'Bin it'.

I’m horrified at the amount of money being thrown into skips when the equipment is perfectly fine and reusable. What happens next is companies then continue to sell replacement equipment (often at inflated prices) to the NHS.

This is a scandal and could save the NHS millions of pounds.

All NHS Trusts must stop the NHS waste scandal.

Make NHS Equipment Work for Everyone:
1. All hospitals and GP surgeries should have a simple system for people to return walking aids and medical equipment.
2. All NHS Trusts should only buy from companies that offer repair, reuse, and recycling programmes.
3. All NHS Trusts need to stop throwing medical equipment into landfill—find better ways to use it.
4. All NHS Trusts need to prove they buy equipment that can be reused or safely sterilised whenever possible.
