To Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London

I spend nearly half my wage just to keep a roof over my head in this city. Some of my friends even share rooms as adults just to stay close enough to work.

Meanwhile, over 105,000 homes across London sit empty, the highest number in 20 years, many owned by the ultra wealthy as an investment, not a home. In Nine Elms and elsewhere, whole blocks worth millions sit dark while workers like us get pushed further out of the city we work in.

New York has just proven this doesn't have to be the norm. It's taxing second homes worth $5 million or more owned by people who don't live there full time. London is weighing up a similar move, on homes worth £2 million or more, and if New York can do it, so can we.

That tax is expected to raise £400 to £430 million a year from 2028, most of it from London. Right now, none of that money is guaranteed to reach the renters and workers priced out of the city it's raised from.

Petition text

Sadiq Khan has already said he wants councils to charge much more council tax on empty and second homes. Government is deciding right now whether to go further, with a new tax on homes worth £2 million or more already on the way.

New York has shown it can be done. We want Sadiq Khan to use this moment, keep pushing Government for the power to properly tax empty and second homes owned by the super rich in London, and make sure that money is ring-fenced for homes workers can actually afford, not swallowed into general Treasury spending.
