To Gillian Keegan, Secretary of State for Education, PM Rishi Sunak, and the House of Lords

I’m deaf and work in a school. The government recognises that British Sign Language (BSL) is a language in its own right, but it is not taught in schools in the United Kingdom and is not a subject on the national curriculum. With deafness on the rise, deaf people have the right to speak, but without people who have had to pay privately to learn BSL, deaf people are limited to who they can have a conversation with.

Students in schools must be taught BSL as a second language, and deaf people should be funded to cover the cost of learning BSL.

I have been in shops and other places like local government offices that have a hard of hearing logo on their doors that says they can help deaf people, but in reality that is not the case.

We must make the government make BSL compulsory in all schools.
