To Andy Burnham - Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

I work all the time, count every penny, and still barely make it to the end of the month feeling like I'm living. If anything, I'm just surviving. I think we all are, if we're honest.

Food, energy, rent, all at an all time high. My wages haven't moved. My tax has. Income tax thresholds have been frozen since 2022, now until 2031, so every small pay rise just gets swallowed up. No announcement, no vote. A stealth tax, straight out of my payslip.

That money's meant to fund the NHS, schools, the stuff that's supposed to look after us. Instead, wards are closing and schools are shutting off wings they can't afford to heat.

Meanwhile, the super rich barely get touched. My wages are taxed the second they land. Theirs mostly aren't wages, they're shares, property, assets that sit untaxed for decades unless they choose to cash in, and even then, the rich have the accountants and trusts to make sure they rarely have to.

This isn't new. The crash, energy bills, the cost of living. Every time, we feel it first, and the people at the top come out richer.

And to be clear, this isn't about doctors or small business owners who've done alright. Fewer than 1,000 households in this whole country are worth over £100 million. That's not a comfortable life, that's a different world entirely, and that's not bad luck. That's a choice, made again and again, about who picks up the tab.

Petition text

I want PM Andy Burnham to bring in a 2% minimum tax on households worth over £100 million, with a rule so the super rich can't dodge it by leaving the country, they'd have to keep paying for at least 10 years after they go.

Economists have already worked out that this would only affect fewer than 1,000 of the richest households in Britain, and it would raise £10 billion a year. It wouldn't cost me or anyone I know a penny more.

I want Andy Burnham to commit to this properly, not settle for a capital gains tweak instead. That only catches money when it's sold. It won't touch wealth sitting in property, trusts, and shares that never gets cashed in at all.
