My pay has gone up a bit over the last couple of years, but so has everything else - the weekly shop, the energy bills, the rent. So I'm not actually better off, I'm just keeping up, or at least trying my best to.
What I didn't realise until recently is that the government has been quietly taking more of my pay at the same time. By freezing the point at which you start paying income tax and leaving it there while everything else went up, more of my wages now sit above the tax-free threshold, even though my pay rise didn't make me any richer. I'm working the same hours, stretched just as thin, and somehow paying more tax than I was a few years ago.
Nobody announced it and we certainly didn't vote for it. It just happened quietly while we were all busy trying to get by.

The government has frozen the personal tax allowance since 2021, and it's staying frozen until at least 2028.
As wages have risen with inflation, more and more of people's pay has crept into the taxable bracket, even when those rises haven't made anyone genuinely better off. It's a tax rise by stealth, and we're calling on the Chancellor to end it by raising the personal tax allowance in line with inflation, so working people can keep more of what they earn. With more and more people in work also being in poverty, action is needed urgently to fix the broken system!
