To Chancellor Rachel Reeves

Rachel Reeves has said the student loan system is “fair and reasonable”. But for millions of graduates, it feels like a mis-selling scandal hiding in plain sight. Interest rates have been raised retrospectively, repayment thresholds frozen, and the goalposts moved, leaving people paying more and owing more, often for decades.

People are delaying having children, giving up on buying a home, turning down promotions, or leaving public service jobs, all while being told this is “working as intended”.

This matters politically. Over 85% of graduates say that proposals to make the student loan system fairer would influence how they vote at the next election. [1] We’re calling on the government to stop gaslighting graduates and act, starting by scrapping interest on student loans and raising the repayment threshold so people can actually afford to live.

Petition text

We are calling on the government to:

🔴 Scrap interest on student loans, so balances stop growing while people are paying them back
🔴 Raise the repayment threshold, so people can cover basic living costs before repayments start

Education should open doors, not close them. Fix the student loan system before another generation is written off.
