On call physiotherapy requires specialist knowledge and experience. Working in other departments does not give you this experience.

Petition text

To Matt Hancock and NHS leaders,

Physiotherapists work in various outpatient, inpatient and community settings; with limited respiratory exposure. After 6 months of qualifying as a physiotherapist, we are expected to go on call. We are a skilled workforce but to complete respiratory competencies and go on call with limited respiratory experience is shocking. Considering how critical respiratory care is to a patients life.

We go on call maximum 3 times per month. Yet, still an insufficient amount of time to be confident in completing the assessment and treatment of a patient in any department in the hospital. Though, we may not be exposed to particular departments or scenarios. On call instills fear for us all who feel inexperienced.

Nobody should fear their job, lose sleep and become anxious. Please make on call physiotherapy for physiotherapists who are experienced, confident respiratory physiotherapists or physiotherapists interested in completing on call duties. Not a mandatory duty.
