In the UK, people only receive 9% of their weekly salary in sick pay, whereas across Europe people tend to receive around 65% of their weekly salary, emphasising that the UK is extremely lacking in its care and support for those on sick leave. So I would aim for whatever is the best rate offered in the EU !eg see https://www.payescape.com/blog/top-countries-for-statutory-sick-pay-maternity-leave-pensions

This is hard. I think it should be more than the National Living Wage, but I think employers would struggle to pay everyone their current salaries AND the overtime needed to cover the absence. Maybe half-way between the two would be fair?

Currently going through statutory sick pay as I was involved in a car accident that wasn’t my fault and until insurance pays out I’m out of pocket and don’t know who I will pay my bills
My job don't offer employees sick days only team leads and managers and I don't think that is right or fair the employees are making the money for them and they could at least give us sick days with pay
Me! I've worked since I was 16yrs old now 41yrs old I have just had 20 wks off through really bad health issues first time I've ever had to be off this long. I've gone from £1200-£1700 per month after tax to £500 per mth to say its been hard is an understatement my mortgage alone is nearly £700 per mth which has also been increasing nearly every mth for a yr. Sick pay weekly per mth would no even cover rent for a working class person.
My son had a heart attack weeks ago. Had only 3 weeks off work wiich is not enough time to recover he has a young family to support and it was a financial struggle with it being so close to Christmas he is only 40. And only could only have statutory sick pay he is on medication for life and been diagnosed with ACF. I fear for his health he has worked all his life never been on benifits. It's disgusting
Myself have been in much trouble with sickness and anxiety mental health issues and had to return back to work to early as can not survive on sickness pay then you end up with the revolving door in and out of work thus increasing the mental health issues increasing stress time off more money worries not win situation which ever way you turn and all because you’re sickness pay doses not do as it says
I have a friend who became ill 2 weeks before she was due to begin her maternity leave. The sick pay was less than what she would be getting on maternity leave. She was very ill and didn't have a choice but to take her maternity leave 2 weeks early. This impacted how much time she could spend with her baby after having him - he's a very ill baby and needs her to look after him. She has ended up being paid the lower sick pay amount now - whilst looking after a sick baby, when her family were already struggling so much that she couldn't afford to take the sick leave before her maternity. It's an awful situation and she's relying on help from friends and family to be able to feed her family (she has one older child with her own health issues)
Going to work sick because can't afford to take time off because it doesn't cover my rent let alone bills or food
After being diagnosed with stage 4 Lymphoma in October 2020, the last thing I wanted to worry about was money and finances, due to the chemotherapy I was about to endure(this ended up in me have 46 weeks intensive and aggressive chemotherapy). Initially everything was ok as per my contract I had a stint of full and half pay, before being reduced to zero pay. I was expecting statutory sick pay to kick in then and I could support my family the best I could. Imagine my surprise when I got my payslip and I was paid exactly nothing!! Despite repeated conversations and objections with my employers, no one even bothered to ask or let me know where I stood(we are now nearing 2025, and I am still waiting a response from my employers). So with bills/rent to pay, household to feed and ongoing chemotherapy I could not see a way out of the situation, causing me more stress. Me and my family nearly lost our home over this, and if it was not for some really close friends helping us out we would have been homeless. My suggestion at the time to my employers was to pay me half pay through the entirety of my treatment(yet again I am still waiting for a response for this question)! With this and other personal issues I had to face during this time it was all too much for me to deal with and I ended up returning to work 1 week after I finished my chemotherapy. I was nowhere near ready to return to work but had to, to get money to pay the bills. Maybe this is what employers and our government actually want!! Let’s pick on the weak and go from there. I hope this helps and you get this pushed through so others won’t have to go through what I did.
When I worked as a play assistant none of us were entitled to sick pay because we part time on low wages and so didn’t earn enough (!!!) This was during the pandemic so seemed even more stark - Changing nappies and wiping noses , catching covid but then not entitled to sick pay. It should not be possible to earn too little for sick pay! The lowest paid depend on their wages the list and are more likely to be sick and more likely working in poor conditions.
I would have not been able to pay my basic house hold bills if my illness had lasted any longer, I became anxiouse and it made the condition worse .
Yes I claimed sick pay and other benefits but we struggled for a very long time family had to supported us or we could have lost our home
My husband has just had a partial knee replacement 2 weeks ago and having to go back to work as we can’t live of this amount they give us I have a mortgage £500 a month plus other bills on top it’s wrong being paid this low amount when there’s genuine people out there that his never been on sick pay .
my self
I became sick due to stress at work and l was sick for 3 months. I didnot receive sick pay from my work and l am in debt with mortagage , my credit file is now spoiled , l worked in the past 8years to get goodcredit and now its has many defaults. l am a single parent so l had to prioritse basic food at least one meal dinner per day, travel money for children to attend school/college and food at college and phones- now in debts with all bills car payments , car insurance got cancelled. This is my 1st month back into work and l do not know when the gas and electricity will be turned off for pay as you go, of which l do not have thecash to top-up the gasand electricity. Council tax have reffered to collections and l feel the rpressure may send me back to being unwell. I get paid monthly and do field work therefore l have to have upfront payments for fuel to work. The company l work for does not pay for sickness.
I'm self employed and get nothing but minimal esa
My son has recently had to fitting episodes and was paye company have suddenly decided to deny this and say he’s self employed 😡. Currently awaiting an appointment with a neurologist which the NHS are saying could be anything upto 58 weeks 🤯 How can someone possibly live that long without money
Generally people work even though they are ill because they simply cannot afford to have time off
Colleague had an allergic reaction to his skin using a product used in workplace was adviced 2 weeks off from a dermatologist but he couldn’t afford being on statutory pay he ended up being in debt so had to come back to work which made his reaction even worse had to leave in the end as was better to claim unemployment benefits
i habe been on ssp since may 2024 and i have struggled contributing to our household bills and i uabe sunken deeper in to depression its seems nobody cares in the government im fighting just to get pip allowance it’s disgusting how disabled people are treated
Yes: me To lengthy to go into...
We can't afford to be off. Myself and other staff have dragged themselves into work to the dependent of others and ourselves. We work as care support staff.
I am self employed so no work no pay
I am an agency worker and only had SSP for months while recovering from a serious operation. You loose the first few days it makes no sense then are expected to live on a small amount of money. It should make the wage you have been earning. If you pay tax and NI you should be getting paid,
Most working class people "can't afford to be sick" and endanger their health by working when they shouldn't.
Son with serious mental health issues. Only paid ssp, rent was twice amount of ssp. Not considering all other bills/ living costs. Almost lost home until family able to step in.
Friend married couldn't claim statutory sick pay, even though paid stamp in own right for years. Patriarchal or what
I was diagnosed with cancer and had to take almost a year off of work with no help as a single parent i got into so much debt as I couldn't afford to keep up payments with bills ect which I'm still behind on I could barely afford to feed myself and my daughter
I was in a car accident and was off work for our months. I was lucky and was given full pay for 6 weeks, aftercwhich i received statutory sick pay, this did not cover our outgoings, all my savings were used to make ends meet. I had no choice but to return to work even though I was not 100% recovered.
I have been - 4 months off work after a crash and it put me and my family into severe financial difficulties - we have not yet recovered from those hard times 8 months after my crash
My wife was identified COVID positive in late 2020s and was on sick leave for 3 weeks. She was paid SSP only, and the company where she worked didn't even pay for the first 7 days.
My sister had an operation on her foot off work for two months and got £80 a week, my friend hasn't worked for almost a year as she was having chemo and radiotherapy for breast cancer got money for the first few months then nothing, ridiculous
Wages show statutory sick payment in column one but then it appears again in deductions column of the same amount? This appears to me that I'm not benefiting at all. ??
Funding statutory sick pay should be on the employer, not decent hard working people.
When on ssp i was only getting £109 a week. This equated to 436 a month. My rent alone was £530 and I still had my other bills to pay too. SSP just isnt livable. If it wasnt for my parents helping out I dont know how I would have got through it
I am a Nurse with long covid, I’ve probably totalled 2.5 years off work due to the virus and I was only able to pay my bills due to my parents paying them, I am still in debt now due to the loss of earnings, I’ll save your life, but who will save mine?
The system made my partners mental health worse WCA and expecting him to do things he cannot manage
My husband and I are self-employed, both highly skilled engineers with years of experience. My husband lost his job in just one day due to a small mistake that wasn't his fault. The nature of the job is hazardous, and he made a minor error. Anyway, I had the flu last week, and we lost a week's income, just like that. Now, I'm more worried than ever about what will happen to us and our 5-year-old daughter if I get sick for any reason. After 20 years of experience, we still have to worry about our jobs.
If I'm ill, I can't work therefore I can't earn, therefore how do I eat and heat my home...
Single person households cannot survive on SSP and so more often than not are forced to work while sick which adds stress and takes longer to recover
I’m paid monthly and have osteoarthritis I’ve had to have a week off and lost over £350 from my wage which is my mortgage money I was left short and had to borrow but I have to pay that back out of next months pay so in effect I’m now going to be in dept as I could require more time off with this condition which effect both knees and my shoulder
My employer has recently changed their policy, meaning that I no longer get full sick pay from day one in certain circumstances. Even a few days on SSP could see me bankrupt and homeless, so I now have to hope I never get sick or injured again.
I have been off sick for more than 2 years with a back problem, and have recieved nothing
Myself and friends have been impacted when being off sick ourselves. We didn’t have enough to cover important bills such as rent never mind anything else
I was off work for 3 months after a hip replacement and struggled to pay rent, bills shopping etc
I became chronically ill in 2021. It took several months for me to get signed up to Universal Credit, in which time I lost all the money I'd saved up as I was self-employed and therefore lost virtually all of my work overnight.
No. But if should be in line with the National living wage as we are subject to continuous inflation! Until that is controlled the working classes are always on the back foot financially.
I am currently signed as unfit to work with severe depression and anxiety. My statutory sick pay has ended and I am on half pay. This is causing further anxieties to getting well as I do not know how I will cope. I am on medication and had been referred to Talk Therapy which took several months. After five weeks they then referred me to Mental Health Together as they felt I needed more support to keep safe. I Was told an assessment would take place within a few days. It took almost a month. I had the assessment and told I would start to receive counselling within a few days, that was three weeks ago and still received nothing. Definitely, spiralling and feel this has taken me back again, very much with the extra impact of financial fears and losing somewhere to live.
In June 2024 I had abdominal surgery and was not supposed to lift for 6 to 8 weeks post op, as a carer this is part of my job, moving and handling. I received a week or two stat. sick pay tried to apply for Universal credit to help with my rent, they aid because I had 2 adult kids at home I could not get help but my son at that time was out of work, as a result I went back to work earlier than I should to be able to pay my bills.
I am impacted by the very small amount of sick pay, I work and if I don’t I only get the statutory sick pay, people who are on benefits get more than I do even if they get sick, it does affect the unemployed at all, they get sick and want disability allowance as well and this government will probably give it to them, unemployed people don’t get stopped three waiting days , only the People that work do… the working people get raped … stop it… give the workers better everything … don’t give it to the people that don’t and want work ( not forget the new reason not to work “ Mental health”) some people have to much time on there hands, I go mental think how I have to work and get less income, three waiting days stopped if sick, no one helps pays my bills
I spent 6 years dealing with PTSD after a bad car accident working for a company that weaponised sick pay. Sickness was always unacceptable and staff were penalized for a sense with sick pay withdrawn for a year after 5 days absence. Ssp not kicking in meant in one particularly bad month I was paid for just 4 working days. With the mental health problems I had I was lacking in confidence to find a new job and got trapped in a cycle with this company. When I joined them I had £60 on my credit card singular. Having so little pay or ssp meant I ran up £40k in debt that took me a decade to deal with.
